Ping and Pong are the official mascots for Genki and were drawn by Fei Huang, also known as KaikiFreAk or simply Kaiki. They were drawn several months prior the 2009 beta con, but were not named until roughly a month after the con had ended during an online conversation between Huang and Allan Petersen, one of the main organizers. Prior to being named, they were known simply as the mascot girl and the (hand) puppet.
Background History
We met these guys a few days after we started planning for Genki 2009. Apparently, Ping wanted to be part of our convention, but had no real talent for anything. One thing she -is- though, is cute, so we thought we would use that and let her be the mascot. Who is this Pong then? Well, Ping found Pong in a trash can one day. Apparently, someone threw out this wondrous sock puppet that has a life all of his own.
Ping & Pong work as a symbiotic pair most of the time. Pong is definitely the brains of the operation, even though we have no idea how that is possible, since he doesn’t have any "real" brains. Ping loves all things Japanese and Pong is along for the ride; he pretty much reflects part of Ping’s personality and they have a lot of fun together, even though they get into heated arguments about the convention at times.
