Anime (アニメ) is said to derive from the Japanese pronunciation of the English word 'animation' (アニメーション animēshon). In Japan, 'anime' is a blanket term that refers to any kind of animation, regardless of origin. In the West, however, it implies animation specifically originating from Japan, but can also refer to other asian countries, e.g. 'Korean anime' or 'Chinese anime'.
