The beads come in various different colours, degrees of opacity, and may sometimes even glow in the dark or be fully transparent with glitter in them. They are in most cases aligned on peg boards of solid plastic and then fused together in order to keep the design even when removed from the board. While not necessary, it is often a good idea to fuse them on both sides to reduce the chance of parts snapping off.

==Workshop==
Perler Bead workshops started on the Danish animanga convention scene with the [[Genki 2009|Genki 2009 beta con]] and has become one of the defining points of the Genki convention. The workshop is intended to be a creative outlet to create 8-bit and 16-bit artwork in Perler, to which Genki supplies templates, and otherwise just let the guests have fun creating designs of their own.
